Where Are They Now: Lester and Brandon Estelle

Brothers who shaped Christian rock, pop, and worship music

Early Roots

Raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Lester and Brandon Estelle grew up surrounded by church music. Both were drumming before they were teenagers, and both would go on to anchor two of the biggest Christian acts of the 2000s.

Lester Estelle II

From Pillar to Kelly Clarkson

Lester joined Pillar in 2002, bringing power and precision to Where Do We Go From Here, The Reckoning, and For the Love of the Game. He later co-founded Stars Go Dim, and in 2013 landed the role of touring drummer for Kelly Clarkson, now serving as part of her house band “My Band Y’all” on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Sessions and Collaborations

Lester has worked with a wide variety of artists including Big and Rich, Disciple, Starset, Kutless, Love and Death, Seventh Day Slumber, Neal McCoy, Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, Agnieszka Chylińska, Julian Vaughn, Group 1 Crew, Kensington Moore, and Casey Donahew.

Notable recordings include
• “Dear X, You Don’t Own Me” by Disciple
• “Did It for the Party” by Big and Rich
• “Nostalgic” with Kelly Clarkson
• “Twelve” with Neal McCoy
• Featured songs with Donnie McClurkin and Kim Burrell
• A collaboration with Agnieszka Chylińska
• Studio work with Casey Donahew

Today Lester continues balancing Nashville sessions, Clarkson’s TV tapings, and international touring.

Brandon Estelle

From Superchick to Solo

Brandon made his mark with Superchick, joining during the Beauty from Pain era and continuing through the Grammy-nominated Rock What You Got. After the band wrapped, he launched into solo artistry, worship leadership, and collaborative songwriting. His solo album Star (2015) and ongoing singles showcase his multi-instrumental talent.

Recent Singles and Collaborations

Brandon’s catalog features “Children of the Living God,” “Truth Works,” “Testify,” “All The Time,” and “My Soul Delights In You” featuring Tricia Brock. He has also collaborated with TobyMac on RIAA Gold-certified work. Through platforms such as AirGigs, Brandon records for film, television, and indie artists, while remaining active in Kansas City worship networks including The Sending Project.

Shared Threads

Both brothers began in church and rose to national prominence through Christian rock before taking unique directions. Lester thrives in high-profile session and television work, while Brandon focuses on songwriting, worship, and remote collaborations. Together they continue to build legacies that inspire across multiple genres.

REVIEW: Breaking Darkness Festival 2025

Second Annual Breaking Darkness Music Festival

By Jimmy Sorrells – Stage Manager
Second Annual Breaking Darkness Music Festival

On August 2nd, The Premier in Hickory, NC hosted something far greater than a concert—it hosted a movement. The second annual Breaking Darkness Music Festival brought together faith, hard rock, heavy metal, and a mission to break chains and lift up the name of Jesus. As the stage manager, I had the privilege of experiencing it all—up close, behind the scenes, and sometimes right in the thick of the mosh pit.

This all-day event featured nine powerful performances, hundreds of attendees, food trucks, passionate volunteers, and most importantly—purpose. With every ticket sold and every piece of merch moved, we raised over $4,000 to support three addiction recovery nonprofits:

  • Bethel Colony of Mercy
  • Safe Harbor NC
  • Recovery NC

All three are doing vital, gospel-centered work to help men and women break free from the bondage of addiction.

Special Thanks

A heartfelt thank you goes to Seth Olsen, guitarist for the band Counter, and the driving force behind this entire festival. His dedication, organizational effort, and commitment to Christ made Breaking Darkness a reality. From coordinating the lineup to working out the logistics, Seth worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Without him, this event simply would not have happened. And looking ahead, he’s already praying for the right people to come alongside him to take Breaking Darkness 2026 even further.

Band Performances (Official Set Order)

Jennifer Alvarado
Kicking off the day with authenticity and worship, Jennifer Alvarado delivered a heartfelt set that brought peace and reflection. Her vulnerability and vocal strength were the perfect start, offering a powerful contrast to the heavier acts that followed.

Tricord
This was my first time seeing Tricord, and they exceeded all expectations. Lead vocalist Jermaine was a standout—not only fronting the band with energy and conviction, but also joining other artists on stage throughout the day. Whether in the crowd or sharing vocals with Cleansing of the Temple and Ignescent, his presence was magnetic. Their set was tight, worshipful, and left a lasting impression.

Igniting the Sky
With a high-energy post-hardcore set, Igniting the Sky brought the volume and chaos in the best way. Their performance was engaging, relentless, and full of fun. This was a set that got faces melted and fists in the air.

Saving Darkness
These guys came in swinging with their own brand of heavy hard rock. The chemistry on stage was clear, and their connection with the crowd was undeniable. Their set was one of the most interactive and entertaining of the day.

Counter
Female-fronted and full of grit, Counter offered something unique and refreshing. The vocals were strong and captivating, and their sound hit with a perfect blend of melody and edge. Seeing Seth Olsen rip it on guitar, knowing he organized the whole event, added an extra layer of respect to their set.

Cleansing of the Temple
Undoubtedly the heaviest band of the day, Cleansing of the Temple brought crushing death metal riffs and deep growls that rumbled through the floor. Frontman Gavin hit the stage in his trademark look: overalls, no shirt, no shoes. Their intensity was unmatched and brought raw, unfiltered energy that pushed the boundaries of Christian heavy music—in all the right ways.

Set For The Fall
A crowd favorite from start to finish, Set For The Fall delivered a set full of powerful hooks, emotional lyrics, and undeniable presence. Their performance was heartfelt and hard-hitting, creating one of the most memorable moments of the day.

Ignescent
This was not just a show—it was an experience. Theatrics and power collided as frontwoman Jennifer emerged from a coffin during their opening song, immediately captivating the crowd. Their fusion of metal, hard rock, and melody was polished and immersive. Ignescent knows how to build an atmosphere and deliver impact.

Disciple
The headliner and veterans of the genre, Disciple closed the night with exactly what we all expected—pure, passionate, purpose-driven rock and roll. Their set was relentless, their message bold, and their performance nothing short of professional. They shouted the name of Jesus from the stage while delivering hit after hit. Disciple continues to be one of the most consistent and inspiring bands in Christian music today.

Spoken Word Moment

At one point during a longer changeover, Billy James performed a spoken word piece that completely shifted the atmosphere. What could have been an awkward pause became a sacred moment. Billy reminded everyone that this wasn’t just a festival. It was an altar.

Behind the Curtain

As stage manager, I saw the day unfold from a different angle. The team effort was incredible—techs, volunteers, artists, vendors, and the venue all worked together with clarity, purpose, and unity. From the first soundcheck to the final load-out, it felt like more than just good planning—it felt like divine coordination.

Final Thoughts

Breaking Darkness Festival 2025 was more than music. It was mission. It was ministry. It was a gathering of the remnant—a bold, loud, passionate expression of faith through hard rock and heavy metal. Chains were broken. Lives were touched. Jesus was glorified.

  • 9 bands
  • 1 mission
  • Over $4,000 raised for recovery and hope

And this is only year two.

I’d do it all again tomorrow. Let’s go even bigger in 2026.

Signum Regis – The Eyes of Power (Remixed & Remastered 2025)

Beyond the Storm Productions | CD, Digital | May 23, 2025

With their second full-length album getting a serious sonic facelift, Signum Regis have done far more than dust off a deep cut from their catalog. The Eyes of Power, originally released in 2010, now returns with a full-blown remixed and remastered edition—and the result is a bold reintroduction to one of their most ambitious and aggressive works.

Rooted in the rich and often brutal tapestry of the ancient Roman world, the album weaves historical storytelling into a high-powered metal framework. This isn’t just history—it’s history set on fire. Vocal legend Göran Edman (formerly of Yngwie Malmsteen’s band) is in top form here, bringing gravitas and grit to every track. His voice cuts like a sword, majestic one moment and raging the next. You’d be hard-pressed to find a heavier album in his discography.

The production upgrade is a game-changer. Guitarist Filip Koluš went back and re-recorded all the rhythm guitars, bringing the tone up to modern standards with sharp, saturated crunch. The mix is clean and thunderous—breathing new life into songs like “Dura Europos” and “Oathbreaker,” where speed and precision collide with dark melodic drama. Even longtime fans will be surprised by how fresh these tracks sound today.

Instrumental centerpiece “The Underground Temples of Mithras” still mystifies, creating an atmospheric pause in the chaos with eerie textures and epic build-ups. And the lyrics across the board? Rich with historical and spiritual resonance, appealing to both metalheads and ancient history buffs alike.

And then there’s that cover art—a wild, apocalyptic vision brought to life by Uwe Jarling, whose previous work has adorned albums by Grave Digger and Mystic Prophecy. A giant serpent slithers through the fray, Roman soldiers fall mid-battle, a war elephant crashes forward, and a king raises his sword in divine defiance. It doesn’t just set the stage—it tells the story. Every inch of it pulses with the same cinematic energy and mythic weight as the music itself.

With The Eyes of Power, Signum Regis have reclaimed one of their strongest records and reintroduced it with fire and finesse. This is power metal with purpose—crafted for listeners who love technical chops, historical storytelling, and spiritual intensity. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering the band, this re-release makes a convincing case for why this album still matters.

For fans of: Symphony X, Kamelot, Masterplan, Yngwie Malmsteen, and concept albums with brains and brawn.
Don’t miss: “Dura Europos,” “Mystical Majesty,” “The Underground Temples of Mithras”

Epic Bard – A Different View

Only One Records, November 11, 2024
Genre: Progressive Metal, Symphonic Rock, Christian Metal
Format: CD, Digital

There’s a certain boldness required to take the name Epic Bard. It implies storytelling, adventure, and something larger than life. With A Different View, Conroe, Texas-based multi-instrumentalist Jens Jorgensen fulfills that vision. His second full-length album under the Epic Bard name builds on the reflective tone of Falls Like Rain, delivering tighter songwriting, increased variety, and a distinct blend of intensity and sincerity.

The album flows as a personal and spiritual journey, each track exploring themes of doubt, insight, and renewal. It opens with Corinthians, a brief but high-energy track with a punk rhythm and punchy drum work.

Impossible Your Truth keeps the punk-influenced feel and adds fast metal riffs, creating a sharp edge and strong momentum early in the album. Deep Down Inside slows the tempo at first, gradually building into a layered composition with emotional pacing. Its structure reflects an inner tension that resolves as the song progresses.

Take A Moment moves quickly with bursts of energy and a slower breakdown that invites reflection. The track includes some of the album’s harsher background vocals, adding contrast and texture. Lyrically, it offers memorable wisdom: we cannot grow when we think we’re in control.

Chaff in the Wind delivers one of the standout lyrical moments with the line, “You are so close, Father, Son, Holy Ghost.” The song blends a reverent tone with melodic phrasing, supported by deliberate pacing and strong lead vocals.

Father of Lies brings the tempo up again with assertive riffing and a darker tone. The arrangement is punchy and driven, adding contrast to the album’s more contemplative sections.

We Can Make It follows with groove-oriented guitar work and layered melodies. The tone leans positive, and the vocal arrangement reinforces a message of persistence and encouragement.

Midnights to Mornings stands out musically with its groovy basslines and smooth transitions. The guitar work is tasteful and expressive, helping to carry the emotional weight of the track.

Dream of Deception raises the intensity with a faster pace and tight execution. It builds urgency and energy, fitting for its themes of disillusionment and inner conflict.

The album closes with Surfside Strut, a laid-back surf rock instrumental that ends the record on a playful and relaxed note. It provides a unique contrast to the rest of the album and leaves the listener with a sense of movement and clarity.

The production is clean and intentional. Jorgensen achieves strong balance across guitars, synths, bass, and drums. His vocal mix is clear and accessible throughout, allowing both lyrics and melodic lines to connect without distraction.

Visually, the album’s artwork supports the core message. Light breaking into a darkened room suggests that perspective can change everything. It is a visual cue to the listener that the album’s title is both an invitation and a challenge.

Epic Bard continues to evolve, and A Different View represents a confident step forward. It is musically diverse, lyrically thoughtful, and unafraid to blend grit with grace.

Track Highlights:
Impossible Your Truth – punk energy with fast metal riffs
Take A Moment – powerful pacing with dynamic vocal textures
Chaff in the Wind – poetic worship anchored by melody
Midnights to Mornings – groovy basslines and expressive transitions
Surfside Strut – an instrumental closer with surf rock charm

A Decade of Christian Rock and Metal on Tour (1995–2005)

A Look Back at the Genre-Spanning Tours That Defined an Era

Introduction

The period from 1995 to 2005 was a transformative era for Christian rock and metal music. It was during this time that I became deeply immersed in the scene. My first concert was Ray Boltz, followed by Carman, which opened the door to bands like Audio Adrenaline, The O.C. Supertones, DC Talk, and many more. I discovered bands such as Living Sacrifice, P.O.D., Project 86, Gospel Gangstaz, and MxPx on VHS tapes (who remembers those?) at my youth group.

One of my all-time favorite memories is the 2001 “Your New Empire Tour” featuring Project 86, Stavesacre, and Living Sacrifice. Three of my favorite bands were in the same place, and the crowd was so into it and energetic.

Fueled by groundbreaking record labels such as Tooth & Nail Records and its heavier imprint Solid State Records, alongside stalwarts like Facedown, Fireproof, Intense, R.E.X., Metro One, Takehold, Strike First, Rescue, Ulterium, Blood and Ink, Bombworks, Soundmass, Endtime Productions, and Nordic Mission, this period witnessed an explosion of diverse subgenres: from thrash and doom to metalcore, hardcore, power metal, and alternative rock.

Conclusion

This unforgettable decade left a permanent mark on Christian music history, spanning underground DIY shows to national record deals. During this time, I had the privilege of running the SC Rock for Life chapter, booking bands like Rock and Roll Worship Circus, Spoken, Disciple, Pillar, The Benjamin Gate, East West, Joy Electric, Luti-Kriss, Mars ILL, LA Symphony, and Eleventyseven. I also attended countless concerts and festivals, where I represented Rock for Life and deepened my love for the scene.

After booking shows, I started collecting physical media. I was thrilled to see so many cassette and CD albums finally released on vinyl. I am getting every one of them that I can. My passion continues through involvement with Christian Metal Group, Heaven’s Metal Magazine, and organizing networking events in entertainment.

What tours did I miss?

Let’s continue preserving the memory of this powerful season of Christian music together.

I can still hear the Echoes of the Spirit Still Dwell.

Interview with Antonio Carlos Batista do Nascimento AKA Batista with Antidemon

nterview with Antonio Carlos Batista do Nascimento ASKA Batista with Antidemon
By Jimmy Sorrells

CMG: Where do you live?

Batista: I live in São Paulo – Brazil

CMG: What was your childhood like?

Batista: A childhood with few friends but a lot of fun in a huge backyard with my parents’ houses and my grandparents’ house on the same land! It was a place with lots of sand and dirt to play in. That’s why I think it was wonderful! I only had one brother who was five years younger than me, who also became my playmate and my friend. In addition to my parents, I had the very strong presence of my maternal grandparents who, as I said, lived in the same yard. Otherwise, it was a childhood with many financial limitations but surrounded by a lot of love and the truth of the Gospel of Christ!

CMG: Did you grow up in a religious home?

Batista: I was born into a Christian family and was very involved in missions for the sake of the gospel! My father was a pastor and from a very young age I also got involved in church activities and so I had a childhood and adolescence involved with the things of the Gospel and many activities in the local church. I was always very curious and questioning about the Holy Bible and I was often always taking some courses on theology. I have always had a great desire and interest in knowing the word of God!

CMG: Did you grow up in a musical home?

Batista: Not at first! When I was still a teenager, my brother and I were given a guitar and began learning how to play the instrument, but only my brother went on to become a musician! When I was 24, I started studying percussion and a few months later I was playing in the orchestra of the church I attended! Later, I began to receive revelations from God regarding a calling to evangelize through Heavy Metal! The problem was that at 25 years old, I knew nothing about Heavy Metal! I didn’t even know that this music existed! But God gave me visions and dreams, and sometimes, even when I was awake, I would hear distorted guitar riffs with guttural vocals and lyrics about the confrontation between good and evil, between heaven and hell. Then one day in 1992, I mistakenly entered a building in the city of São Paulo called “Galeria do Rock.” To this day, it has five floors with stores that sell Heavy Metal CDs, vinyl records and T-shirts. When I entered this place, I came across hundreds of Headbangers, Punks, Goths and Skinheads for the first time… I didn’t know any of this! In this gallery, I started hearing music coming out of the stores! A song similar to the ones I had in my visions and dreams! I was very impacted by this, because at that moment I discovered that this song already existed and many people liked it!

That same day and in that place, I heard a supernatural voice that spoke inside me: This song that has been coming to your mind, I am the one who is giving it to you and I will make you become one of these people and through this song that I have been giving you, you will reach them for my Kingdom! That was really impactful

When I understood this! Even though we were born into a Christian home and knew a little about the Holy Bible, I had never had an experience with God like that, and I believe that at that moment all my questions and doubts about God disappeared, and from that day on I truly converted to Jesus Christ! Understanding God’s calling for my life, I started the band Antidemon and the entire mission related to evangelism. It was then that I began to get involved with Heavy Metal, becoming the lead singer of Antidemon in January 1994, and in 1995 I also took on the bass guitar. Over the years, many people converted to Christ through Antidemon, and in 1988, with these fruits, our church was born with the proposal of reaching the underground through Heavy Metal! At the time, it was called Comunidade Zadoque, and in 2006 it was renamed Crash Church, where I have been the pastor of this flock since the beginning until today.

CMG: What instruments do you play?

Batista: Many years ago, I played percussion in a church orchestra. But out of necessity, in the second year of Antidemon’s existence, I switched to bass, replacing the bassist who left the band. At that time, even though I didn’t know how to play bass, I took on the instrument to fulfill the schedules! I, who had been only a vocalist until then, became Antidemon’s bassist to this day. Lately, I’ve been trying to play guitar as well.

CMG: What were your favorite bands as a child?

Batista: I didn’t know about heavy metal until I was 25 years old! In the church where I was raised, it was forbidden to listen to any music that wasn’t strictly Christian. And even if Christian heavy metal came to me, I couldn’t listen to it, because that style would be considered demonic.

CMG: What bands have you been involved in?

Only Antidemon.

CMG: When was your band formed and who is in the band?

Batista: Antidemon was born in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, on January 12, 1994. I am the only member left from that time, alongside Juliana Batista, who has been the band’s drummer since the beginning of 2006. We are both married and form the basis of Antidemon, which we have been in contact with for the last 10 years, with a team of several guitarists who have helped us. So we are grateful to God for being able to continue this Mission, always depending on His blessing and His complete will in our lives!

CMG: What is your favorite snack on the road during a tour?

Batista: Rice, beans and meat! But it’s often hard to find! However, on our recent tour of Japan I think I changed my preferences a bit! At least when I’m in Japan! On every road and street in Japan there are convenience stores with delicious and very fresh food! You really don’t go hungry on a tour in Japan!

CMG: Which band would you clear your schedule to tour with?

Batista: Mortification!

CMG: Do you have any plans to tour Australia or the US?

Batista: Yes! I really want to visit these two countries! This year we have played 39 countries with Antidemon, and we know that Australia and the US will be part of this list and this history soon! When we had a contract with Rowe Productions, our Australian Tour almost happened! And in the United States of America, we have followers of the band all over the country! So it will happen soon!

CMG: Have you suffered negative reactions because of the style of music you play?

Batista: In these 31 years of Antidemon, “negative reactions,” verbal aggression against us and even physical aggression are things that have always been part of our trajectory! We have suffered attacks from groups opposed to our faith and also attacks from so-called Christians from more conservative churches! We are used to always having a lot of people who oppose our work! We have suffered many physical attacks and at times we have been seriously hurt.

CMG: What do you think of the current state of Christian Metal?

Batista: We have to be very careful not to become a closed ghetto of Christians, where we have a life and a history separate from the non-Christian metal scene! I believe that we need to apply the words of Jesus to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth! The light will shine brighter and brighter when it is in the midst of dense darkness! Salt needs to mix and disappear in order to have its effect! Then everyone will feel its flavor! As Christian bands, we have to be light in the midst of darkness, and not just light in the midst of light! We need to be the salt of the earth! We need to get out of the salt shaker and mix, full of the anointing of Christians, with those who do not know the Gospel! This way, Christian bands will be able to have greater relevance in this world! There are many Christian bands that say they do not have a calling to spread the gospel and play Heavy Metal as a musical taste and entertainment. I respect them! However, to truly consolidate what is said about the Christian scene, I believe that we must position ourselves in relation to what we believe and live!

CMG: What is your favorite non-metal music to listen to?

Batista: Classical Music.

CMG: What is something about you that no one reading this would know?

Batista: Despite having long tours with Antidemon and a busy nightlife, perhaps no one would think that I am an extreme homebody and I really enjoy the tranquility of being at home with my wife Juliana, enjoying her company and enjoying the simple things in life, like preparing our own food every day, enjoying our daily coffee and going to bed early most nights!

CMG: Are you working on new music?

Batista: We recently recorded Antidemon’s fifth album! It is being distributed worldwide on CD and Vinyl by the American label “Vision Of God Records”! Its name is “Convergence” and it has 10 new songs! We are very happy that this release will happen in 2024. For those who want to know this and all of our other albums, just look for us on digital platforms like Spotify and Deezer.

CMG: What is your favorite thing about being a Christian?

Batista: Knowing that God wants us to be conformed to the image of his son Jesus Christ as described in Romans 8:9! We can look like Christ, think like Christ, react to this life as Christ reacted! So that he may be the firstborn among many brothers! This wonderful desire of God for those who accept salvation in Christ is my favorite thing as a Christian!

CMG: How can the Christian Metal Group community support you?

Batista: What we need most is prayer and spreading our missions around the world! We are a missionary of Heavy Metal and we are constantly praying and thinking about which country would be most needed for us to go to! So we count on your help in prayer and let us know if anyone has a space to play! We will certainly fill this space with God’s love! I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity to tell you a little about how we think and how we live!

Billy Fraser interview – DISCERN

Billy Fraser interview – DISCERN
By Jimmy & Jay

CMG: Where do you live?

Billy: I live in the Northern Suburbs of Dallas, TX, in Garland. Love this area!

CMG: What was your childhood like?

Billy: I was blessed to have a wonderful childhood provided to me by my parents. I never was in want, my mother was wonderful, and I was given the love I needed, as all children should be given.  The teen years were rougher, but as far as my childhood, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

CMG: Did you grow up in a religious home? How did you come to your faith?

Billy: Most of my family would go to church every Sunday, and we were Lutheran. In all honesty, I hated every minute of church growing up. I felt it was stupid, a waste of time, and I remember, even as young as age 5, I felt that all that I saw were humans just acting out of the fear of the unknown, with man-made rituals thought up by someone’s own limited notions of God, which is of course, what religion is to begin with, and I despised it all. Now, with that being said, I did believe in God, and I had respect for Him, even though I was not saved yet, but I just hated church itself.

Years later at age 11, through 3 specific things: Nature, Science, and the Animal Kingdom, I surrendered my life to Christ and became Born Again.

CMG: Did you grow up in a musical home?

Billy: Not really, but my parents did listen to Elvis, The Guess Who, The Eagles, and such. However, the one defining moment in my life regarding music, and what changed my life’s course, was when I saw a KISS commercial, at age 3. I remember standing in front of the TV, not realizing what exactly I was looking at, but I was blown away 1000% by the stage show, the makeup, their music, and the drummer behind his massive drum set. At that moment, I decided I was going to be a drummer, and the following year at age 4, I got a drum set and started playing drums.  While the Beatles influenced KISS and countless others, KISS were MY Beatles.

From that point on, I was listening to as much music as possible that I could find, in addition to what my brother was jamming to, such as Queen, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Foreigner, and many others.

CMG: What instruments do you play?

Billy: Drums, first and foremost, then guitar/bass.

CMG: As a musician, how did you gravitate towards Death Metal?

Billy: I had joined my first full band at age 14 in 1988, which was Summoned, and we were a Christian Thrash Metal band.  Soon after joining, we recorded a demo, selling a ton in the underground, through reviews and a local metal shop.  We were a 3-piece at first, and then once we obtained a 4th member who played lead guitar, the songs became so much better.  We opened for One Bad Pig, Vengeance Rising, and played a few other gigs around town.

Since Thrash and Death Metal are basically on the same highway, it only was natural to verge into the Death Metal lane, so to say. I had first heard Death’s album Leprosy, in 1989, and I was blown away!! Those vocals, those riffs…I had never heard anything like it!!! Then, at a Vengeance Rising gig in 1990, I met my longtime friend/brother Neal Christmas, who showed me a jambox tape recording of his death metal band, and again, I was totally blown away.  Such a different view musically than Thrash!  Months later, I was exposed to Obituary and Napalm Death, so my band Summoned naturally progressed to full-on death metal, by early 1991, with our songs strongly reflecting our love of the bands mentioned before, Obituary and Napalm Death, with blasting, tons of double bass, etc..

CMG: Why does this term “Christian Death Metal” still offend so many people in Christian and secular circles?

Billy: Well, the offense is the name of Christ itself, for those who do not know Him, as His name and power offends our sinful nature, as humans.  The other avenue, with Christians who are offended by it and not understanding the fact that Believers can love and play death metal, is just either pure ignorance or an unwillingness to embrace the fact that God Himself is not limited by a human’s likes or dislikes, as He can use anything He wants to use, to get His point and message across. For what I do with DISCERN, I use the term, ” Spirit-Filled Death “, as technically, that is what it is.

CMG: Have you always done Christian music exclusively?

Billy: Yes.

CMG: What were your favorite bands growing up?

Billy: My favorite bands then and now are the same, plus of course, many more bands as I have gotten older and discovered the plethora of bands out there:  KISS, first and foremost, Queen, Whitesnake, Stryper, along with earlier Christian Rock/Metal bands such as Barnabas, The Resurrection Band, Philadelphia, Messiah Prophet, Saint, Soldier, Cross, Paradox, Barren Cross, Bloodgood, One Bad Pig, etc..

I am also very much into hardcore bands such as Sick Of It All, Youth of Today, Judge, Insted, and Seven Seconds.

Regarding Thrash, Death, and a little bit of Black: Old Metallica and Anthrax, Slayer, Deliverance, Vengeance Rising, Razor, Obituary, Napalm Death, Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Immolation, Suffocation, Asphyx, Skeletal Remains, Vore, Immortal, the mighty Vader, and the list goes on. Those are the main faves I can think of right now.

CMG: What is the history of the band Oblation? – How did the band start, who was in the band, what did they play, what was the mission, and why did the band end?

Billy: After Summoned’s last gig in Houston at the After Dark Club in 1991, the band split up. I met up with Mitch Reese, who played rhythm guitar, and originally I had wanted to continue Summoned with Mitch and a whole new lineup, but he felt it was best to start fresh, and that is how Oblation was started. We started writing songs quickly, and by 1992, we recorded our one-song demo for Dead Unborn, having our friend Dino Deblasio record bass/lead guitar in the studio, followed by  producing our homemade video for it. Shortly after, Mike Rizzo joined, who played lead guitar, and we all worked on more material, finally to have Alan Tregoning, our bassist, who is from Australia, fly over to join us, and Oblation was then a solid and full outfit. We put out our 3-song demo in 1994, played many shows in TX and other states, received tons of great reviews/press in the Death Metal underground, and by 1995, we had much more material for another release. However, by the end of 1995, half the band were not interested in continuing to play death metal, while the other half did still want to focus on putting out death metal, so we ended the band.

CMG: Let’s talk about the video for “Dead Unborn”. I saw it for the first time on a Heaven’s Metal videotape (yes, on videotape) and was blown away by both the musicality and the imagery. What influenced your decision to tackle abortion in Death Metal, and was there any backlash about the video being too “gory”?

Billy: We decided to simply show people the fruit of what they originally state they believe in, as far as ” abortion rights. ” So many only think as far as the idea of it, versus what it REALLY is, which is the murder of an unborn child. The results were outstanding: So many were totally floored, minds were changed, ideas were re-arranged, and the fact of what we showed was the evidence that changed minds in this issue. There were a few ”  loud ” reactions to it, but that is to be expected when reality itself, for such an issue, is shown in its entirety. Years after Oblation ended, I received a letter from someone who showed our video to someone considering an abortion, who then changed her mind after seeing it.  That right there is the reward itself.

CMG: You were an official member or a live/session musician for Crimson Thorn? Tell us that history and association. (IMHO, it was inevitable because of the similarities in your style of Death Metal, and theirs)

Billy: Oblation met the mighty Crimson Thorn back at Michigan Mosh 1994, and we were blown away by their sheer power!! We became instant friends, and it was such a blessing!  Being that I am their biggest fan and knew all of their songs on drums, when they needed a drummer, I flew up and played a few gigs with them, and we all had a blast, pun definitely intended. The understanding of the situation was, of course, when they found a drummer up there in MN, to use them, but until they did find a drummer, I would help them out when I could.  Miles Sunde, their main guitarist and songwriter, has done the DISCERN album cover artwork for the past two DISCERN albums, and will be working on the new album, as well. Love the Thorn!

CMG: When did Discern form and who is in the band?

Billy: DISCERN formed in 1996 immediately after the disbanding of Oblation. In fact, DISCERN was going to be a side project of mine while Oblation was going full-force. I had already written a number of songs for DISCERN by the time Oblation had ended, which ended up on the first DISCERN album.

I am DISCERN, writing and recording all instruments/music, while I have the pleasure of having friends doing the lead guitar solos. On the first album, I had my producer Andrew Albert do the leads, while on the second album, Rick Hunter-Martinez from metal legends Soldier shredded at will, and his will was very strong!  He will also be on the new/upcoming DISCERN album, as well.

CMG: What influenced your decision to create an album where you did all vocals and played all instruments?

Billy: I just felt that it was very natural and easy to write/record my own music.

CMG: Discern is a Death Metal band that is not shy about your heavy Blues influence! Who are your favorite Blues artists and what influenced you to incorporate some of that into Discern?

Billy: The Blues influences come from a love of the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, and Whitesnake, who are technically a classic rock blues band, and their power totally has a light shining on my music that strongly influences it.  Stevie Ray Vaughan was beyond incredible, and his talent, IMO, is unmatched. I think having the Blues influence in the music of DISCERN is appropriate, as Blues is just as powerful as death metal, and it gives the music a different edge.

CMG: You tend to tackle a lot of controversial subjects on the Discern albums – especially with certain teachers in the church and certain movements. What fueled your interest in these subjects?

Billy: Just the simple fact that God’s Word speaks about these issues, such as false prophets, and the time that will arrive where men will not put up with sound doctrine, but who will listen to teachers who tickle their itching ears. Those who take an imaginary clay mold of who they think “God” is, but molding this image to the image they themselves want to serve, instead of being transformed by Christ Himself.  This false image they follow is a false god who desires everyone to be healthy, wealthy, and literal gods of their own life, and fully believing they are “little gods! “.  This echoes the lie spoken by the serpent in the Garden of Eden, where he stated “You will be like God” if they ate of the fruit God forbid Adam and Eve to eat.  This deception, and teachings, are very strong within the Body of Christ, brought to us by many lying wolves from hell itself who teach such atrocities.  I am not speaking about secondary issues, such as end times, miracles existing today, different views of baptism, etc.. We can all differ on such issues but can remain steadfast and united with the major essentials of the Christian Faith, such as who God/Jesus are, the issue of sin, and the need of repentance, etc. However, when that one preacher preaches Biblical ideas for 15 minutes, and then in minute 16, slips in the subtle heresy that changes everything about the “god” they are preaching about, that is when true evil/heresy is abounding.  So, with all of that being said, on every DISCERN album, I have a song/songs about the bottom-feeding heretical false-god salesmen within the Body of Christ who need to be exposed. Those liars on TV begging for money, and who perpetuate the cult of the Faith Movement.  After all, as Believers, we ARE supposed to expose the devil’s schemes, naturally.

Interesting how so many who do not know Christ can see through this deception, alongside Biblically-Faithful followers of Christ, yet many who claim Christ fall for these circus acts in the Church!

CMG: How many albums have you done so far?

Billy: Two: Revive and Rebuke from 1998 and To Praise With Persecution from 2007.

CMG: What are the pros and cons of being the sole member of a “band”?

Billy: Pros: You work on your own time and accord, and there is no arguing about songs with other band members..HA HA!

Cons: Not having outside influences bringing another flavor to the songwriting mold.

CMG: What is your favorite snack on the road while touring?

Billy: I have never been on tour, but a few favorite snacks of mine are these Chocolate-Nut Bars I get from Aldi, and Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, which I try to eat as least as possible!! LOL!

CMG: What band would you clear your calendar to tour with?

Billy: Vader, Suffocation, Internal Bleeding, the mighty Asphyx, Napalm Death, Obituary, Immortal, and the list goes on.

CMG: Do you have plans to tour Australia or the USA?

Billy: Australia? I would love to visit Australia someday!!  As far as touring as a whole, I have no plans whatsoever, as I do not have an actual band itself to tour with, so at this time, not an option.

CMG: Have you had backlash because of the style of music you play?

Billy: Nope, not at all!

CMG: How has the reaction been to DISCERN?

Billy: Wonderful!! I have been in metal/death metal magazines, and played on metal radio stations, from all over the world.  The response has always been great!  CDs of my second album are still selling and also still available!

CMG: What do you think of the current state of Christian Metal?

Billy: I honestly cannot answer that question because I simply do not follow the current Christian Metal scene itself.

CMG: What is your favorite non-metal music to listen to?

Billy: I love: Classical, Hardcore, and Electronic music!

CMG: What is something about you that no one reading this would know?

Billy: I dip all of my fries in Mayo.

CMG: Are you working on new music?

Billy: Yes, I have the third installment of Spirit-Filled Death finished and I am practicing up at this very moment to plan a recording date, so I can be the best I can be.

CMG: What is your favorite thing about being a Christian?

Billy: The astounding fact that the God of the entire Universe desires a relationship with me, who loves me and who provided me a way out of the hell I was facing because of my sin, and that He/God/Jesus are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

As Believers, we do not have religion made by the sinful nature of man, we have the true/living reality of Jesus, in a relationship with Him!!

His love is pure!

CMG: How can the Christian Metal Group community support you?

Billy: By supporting me in prayer, and by purchasing the new CD once it is out, which I am hoping for a release early next year.

Saving Darkness – Till The Death Of Me EP review

This hard rock band hails from Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA.

Aaron Kiby – Vocals
Mike Ruppe – Guitar
Ryan Huskey – Guitar
Jeff Genobles – Drums
Andy Will – Bass

The artwork is awesome. It’s the classic good vs evil,
and with the giant cross so we know Jesus wins.

Are you looking for a hard rock Christian band? You have found one with Saving Darkness. They bring the Jesus filled hard rock with some screaming. When you listen to their lyrics, there is no doubt these guys love Jesus. I have personally seen them perform live and they put on a great show as well.

The EP kicks off with a soft guitar track called Nightfall followed by Rise which is a hard rock song with great guitar work and some screaming. Then Gehenna brings some crunchy guitars accompanied by screaming. Next is the song Oxygen. This is the best song on the EP. It is a hard and catchy song that is memorable. This should be released as a single. The following song is called Forever. It is a great rock song with a guitar solo. Up next is Overload, a hard hitting banger with some screaming followed by Daybreak which is a soft piano outro.

I am looking forward to this EP and then the release of a full album in the future.

Jimmy Lamar Sorrells

Anders Köllerfors Interview – Drummer for Narnia & All For The King

Interview Anders Köllerfors – Drummer for Narina & All For The King

CMG: Where do you live?

AK: I live in a tiny little place called Omsed in Skåne, in the south part of Sweden.
8 houses scattered on some fields in the middle of nowhere.

CMG: What was your childhood like? Did you grow up in a religious home? Did you grow up in a musical home?

AK: I had a very good childhood.
I grew up in a christian home. My mom was a teacher and music leader in church. My dad had a boat building factory and was a singer. I have two brothers.
There was a lot of music going on. My older brother is a multi-musician that plays pretty much any instrument and my younger brother is a great pianist.
I started to play the violin at the age of nine but switched to play the drums at twelve.
Due to the fact that we were in church so much it made it very natural to perform in front of an audience from an early age. I think I sang solo from the age of five and played drums in moms choir from the age of thirteen.

CMG: What instruments do you play?

AK: I play drums and violin. Also little piano when nobody is listening.

CMG: What bands have you been involved in?

AK: Right now I’m a member of Narnia and All For The King.
I do work a lot with Magnus Karlsson so through him I have worked with Anette Olzon, Magnus Karlssons Free Fall, Allen&Olzon, Starbreaker and so on…

CMG: What were your favorite bands growing up?

AK: On my seventh birthday I invited my class to a party and played the best music I knew.
Mozart!!! But nobody liked it. Hahaha..!
Later I listened to Jerusalem, Leviticus, Stryper, Rush, Yes, & Toto among others.

CMG: What musical genre is Narnia considered?

AK: I think it’s a bit hard to answer… but maybe a hybrid of melodic and progressive metal with a neoclassical and symphonic touch.

CMG:What’s your favorite Narnia album?

AK: I really like ”Course of a Generation” and the latest album ”Ghost Town.”

CMG:The band is named after a world in the writings of C.S. Lewis. How much of his writings have you read, if any?

AK: When I was a kid the whole family gathered around the fireplace on the weekends and my father read the whole series of Narnia. Good times!

CMG:Who is your favorite character in the Chronicles of Narnia?

AK: Aslan, of course! I like King Caspian. He seems to be a nice dude as well!

CMG: Narnia is a band that has always been respected by secular audiences. What do you think contributes to that respect the most?

AK: First of all I think the respect comes from the fact that the members are really good musicians but also that we stand up for what we believe in. There are no compromises and I think that people really respect that even if they don’t believe the same as we do.

CMG: What are your favorite bands that are newer?

AK: I really like ”Icefish”! Virgil Donati and Marco Sfoglis band. Very progressive music!!!
Arch Echo is also amazing.

CMG: What is your favorite snack while on tour?

AK: Always Daim!!!

CMG: Have you ever had backlash from fans for a musical direction?

AK: I haven’t noticed any of that. I’m pretty new in the band though but I haven’t heard anything from the others either. We have the best fans, really!

CMG: What’s your favorite non-metal music to listen to?

AK: I really like Sting, Dirty Loops…

CMG: What is something about you that no one reading this would know?

AK: I used to be a killer on the unicycle.

CMG: What is your favorite thing about being a Christian?

AK: I´m saved and I have a personal relationship with the creator of all!

CMG: How can the Christian Metal Group community support you?

AK: Pray for Narnia and All For the King and that whatever I play on the Holy Spirit is going to be present in the drums.

CMG: I read that you are creating your own drum brand. Tell us about that.

AK: I have a new drumline called ReThink Drums. The shells are 3D printed with recycled wood. Very eco-friendly.
Due to the fact that the shells are printed there is no tension in the shells and they will stay round. Then my work is to make real drums out of the printed tube.
I grind the bearing edges, make the snare bed, drill all the holes and assemble all the hardware.
Soon we will release other materials in the drums as well. Very exciting.
