If you want to know how to write a great metalcore song, Fit For A King is teaching the class, and their latest single, “Dirt,” is a perfect example of why this band continues to be one of the strongest names in the genre.
From the opening moments, “Dirt” hits hard and refuses to let up. The crushing guitar riffs, pounding drums, and aggressive rhythms come together with incredible precision. Guitarists Bobby Lynge and Daniel Gailey, bassist Ryan “Tuck” O’Leary, and drummer Trey Celaya deliver a musical assault that demonstrates just how talented these musicians are. The breakdowns are punishing, the transitions are tight, and every instrument has its place.
Vocally, Ryan Kirby delivers another impressive performance. Most of the song is dominated by his signature harsh vocals, but he also throws in some deeper, deathcore-style growls and a touch of clean singing. The vocal variety adds another dimension to an already powerful track without sacrificing any of its aggression.
Lyrically, “Dirt” deals with blame, hypocrisy, and the destructive consequences of refusing to take responsibility for your own failures. Kirby explained that the song addresses how people create stories that blame others for their downfall rather than acknowledging their own mistakes.
That message comes through in the lyrics, which paint a picture of bitterness, self-deception, and someone slowly being consumed by their own choices. There is plenty of anger here, but there is also something worth thinking about. How often do people blame everyone around them instead of looking in the mirror?
The official visualizer is interesting and open to interpretation. Rather than spelling everything out for the viewer, it leaves room to develop your own understanding of the imagery and how it connects with the song’s message. Sometimes a video that makes you think is more effective than one that explains everything.
One of my favorite aspects of “Dirt” is how it ends. After spending most of the song delivering one crushing blow after another, the band takes an unexpected turn, bringing everything down to a soft conclusion with a little piano. That contrast works beautifully. After all the musical aggression and lyrical bitterness, the quieter ending gives the listener a moment to reflect.
“Dirt” is one of three additional tracks appearing on the deluxe edition of Lonely God, scheduled for release October 30 through Solid State Records. Alongside “Steady Doom” and “Blood Pact,” it gives fans another reason to revisit an already impressive album.
Fit For A King continues to prove that metalcore can be brutally heavy, technically impressive, and emotionally engaging without sacrificing memorable songwriting. “Dirt” delivers on all fronts, and that subtle piano ending is the perfect finishing touch.
Class dismissed. Fit For A King just gave another lesson in how metalcore is done.
