Some bands play heavy music, and then there are bands like Extol that take heaviness to another level with incredible musicianship and technical precision. Their latest single, “Merciless Hunger,” is another home run for these Norwegian metal veterans.
Musically, this song is rock solid. The technical ability of these four musicians is impressive, and when Peter Espevoll, Ole Børud, David Husvik, and Christer Espevoll come together, they create metal magic.
The guitar work is absolutely incredible. The riffs are complex, aggressive, and executed with precision. There is so much happening musically, yet everything fits together. The drums are relentless, providing the backbone for the incredible guitar work, while the bass adds to the heaviness.
Then there are the vocals. Peter Espevoll delivers exactly what this song needs. His harsh, commanding vocal approach complements the music perfectly. With all the technical musicianship happening around him, the vocals never get lost. Instead, they add another layer of intensity that makes the song even better.
Lyrically, “Merciless Hunger” takes aim at those who manipulate others through ideology, religion, and claims of moral superiority. Lines about a merciless hunger for power and disguising selfish intentions as love and justice deliver a strong warning about the dangers of control and deception. It is a thought-provoking message wrapped in some seriously heavy music.
The accompanying visualizer takes a simple approach. There are no performance shots or lyrics flashing across the screen. Instead, viewers are presented with a broken, desolate world with lightning illuminating the background. It is dark, atmospheric, and fitting for the song. Nothing fancy here, but sometimes keeping things simple works best, especially when the music is this good.
Extol has been delivering their unique brand of technical extreme metal since the early 1990s, and “Merciless Hunger” proves they haven’t lost a step. What makes this band special is how they combine musical complexity with raw aggression without sacrificing either.
With their upcoming album, Aura of Decay, scheduled for November 6 through Solid State Records, this latest single gives longtime fans plenty to be excited about. The album will be their first full-length release since 2013.
Another home run for Extol. The guitar work alone is worth repeated listens, but when you add the vocals, drums, and thought-provoking lyrics, you have a complete package.
If this is what we can expect from Aura of Decay, November 6 cannot come soon enough.
